Entry Requirements
To apply for entry to a course, prospective students are required to complete the online Expression of Interest form and satisfy the entry requirements.
Entry requirements apply to all courses offered by ANMEC and are in place to ensure students are academically suited to studying their chosen course.

In order to be offered a place in one of our courses, we will endeavour to ensure you are suited to undertake the approved course and will seek confirmation of your ability to complete the course.
Establishing Eligibility, Entitlement and Conducting the Upfront Assessment of Needs (UAN)
Training providers such as ANMEC are required to complete the following process prior to establishing a subsidised training account.
The process has three key parts, Eligibility, Entitlement and Upfront Assessment of Needs. Each part has associated conditions that must be satisfied and completed prior to a training account being established.
- Eligibility – establish participant eligibility for subsidised training by reviewing participant information including, identity and residence, citizenship, school enrolment, JobSeeker status and presence of apprenticeship or traineeship contract.
- Entitlement – assess and confirm participant entitlement to undertake subsidised training by reviewing current qualifications and concessions.
- Upfront Assessment of Need: conduct an assessment of the participant’s suitability, support needs and literacy and numeracy capabilities.
Entry Procedure
Upfront Assessment of Need - for Prospective Students
UAN
ANMEC utilises an Upfront Assessment of Need (UAN) process for all students, with the aim to improve student success with their studies.
This is also a condition for individuals seeking access to subsidised training, and VET Student Loans regardless of prior educational attainment, employment experience or employment status.
The UAN is undertaken prior to enrolment within the program. There are three main elements to the UAN, this includes assessment of your:
- suitability and fit with your qualification of choice
- individual learning, personal or complex needs, to enable planning of appropriate support requirements
- your reading, writing and numeracy skills
Suitability and Support Needs Assessment
A UAN interview will be scheduled with the Course Manager, this is an important opportunity to provide and gather information specific to your chosen qualification, and to identify any individual learning, personal or complex needs you may have.
The Course Manager will complete a suitability and support needs checklist as part of this interview. The interview is used to determine an applicant's suitability for the course they are applying for.
Literacy and Numeracy Assessment
At ANMEC we use the Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) online tool to achieve this. This is the assessment tool approved by the Department of Innovation and Skills (DIS).
Purpose
The CSPA is an online literacy and numeracy tool to determine your reading, writing and numeracy skills, prior to commencing training and determine if support is necessary to ensure a successful outcome in the qualification of choice and transition to work.
This is also referred to as Language, Literacy and Numeracy testing (LLN) and provides the following information to help;
- assess whether you require any additional learning support, this may include access to funded foundation skills bridging units
- determine your academic eligibility for VET Student Loans (candidates are required to display competence at or above Exit Level 3 in reading and numeracy)
- meet the eligibility criteria to access subsidised training
The CSPA is not used for ranking applicants for an offer of place within a qualification.
How the CSPA is performed
The CSPA is completed on a computer, in person at the ANMEC site. Details on how to book this will be provided by the course administrator when you have completed and submitted your expression of interest for the course you wish to apply for. The assessment may take up to 3 hours to complete depending on which course you are applying for.
The three components of CSPA;
Reading
This requires reading a section of text and responding to related questions. The text and questions are provided in a split screen format, with the text on one side and the questions in a separate area on the opposite side of the screen. This section looks at your understanding and interpretation of written language.
Writing
The writing section contains two writing tasks, where you are required to respond to the question prompts. You will be required to write a minimum of 3 paragraphs, with at least 3 sentences in each paragraph, for grading purposes. This component looks at vocabulary, grammar, purpose, audience, quality of ideas, text cohesion, language choices, sentence structure and spelling.
Numeracy
The numeracy questions are set in a range of real-life situations. The questions are multiple choice and numerical entry questions. This section focuses on number and algebra, measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.
Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Indicator (SRNI)
Must be completed under supervision to assess reading and numeracy capabilities in
individuals seeking access to subsidised training in a Certificate III course.
The SRNI identifies further assessment is required if the individual is below Australian Core Skills Framework
(ASCF) Exit Level 2 in either reading or numeracy.
Where no further assessment is required (they reach exit level 2 in reading and numeracy) the individual may proceed in seeking access to subsidised training to a Cert III level.
Where further assessment is required the individual must undertake the Literacy and Numeracy Comprehensive Assessment (LANCA). This will require sitting a second LLN and just completing the section they were unsuccessful in completing.
For instance, if they were successful in the reading, but unsuccessful in the numeracy. They will need to return to sit a LANCA test (if they wish to continue with their application) and just complete the numeracy portion.
Literacy and Numeracy Comprehensive Assessment (LaNCA)
Must be completed under supervision to assess reading, writing and numeracy capabilities in individuals seeking access to subsidised training in a Certificate IV or higher qualification.
The LaNCA identifies the individual meets the
minimum level of ACSF Exit Level 3 in reading and numeracy and ACSF Exit Level 2 in writing for access to a Certificate IV or higher qualification.
Where the individual meets the levels required the individual may proceed in seeking access to subsidised training to a Cert IV level.
Where the individual is below the minimum level required the
LaNCA must be interpreted to determine what literacy and/or numeracy supports are needed to support a successful training outcome.
Assessment Results
When the applicant has completed the test, Course Administrators will provide feedback via email to the applicant, so that they know the outcome of the results of LLN testing, as soon as practicable.
ANMEC will retain the students results for 5 years and if required, results are to be reported to the Secretary (DESE/VSL) in the form, manner and by the time requested by the Secretary.
ANMEC will conduct the LLN process with honesty and integrity.
If after LLN testing your results are not at the required level, you will be contacted to discuss alternative study pathways.

The link will enable you to register your own unique email address and be sent a link to access the practice assessment. If you do not receive the link within 15 minutes, please check your ‘junk’ folder in your email inbox.
At the end of the 6 reading and 6 numeracy questions you can go online and see what you answered correctly or incorrectly and can go back and re-read the question.
There is also an option to restart the practice assessment if you wish to try again before you exit.
Once you exit you will not be able to use the link you received again and will need to re-register with a different unique email address.
Following the UAN process;
After your SUITABILITY AND SUPPORT NEEDS ASSESSMENT and LITERACY AND NUMERACY ASSESSMENT the Course Manager will review applicants.
If the applicant has met our Student Entry Requirements and their application is successful they will receive formal advice in the form of an emailed letter of offer. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised via email also.
